Editing research

Cut*-
A cut is used to transition between shots.
There are two types of cut:
> Cut in- when anobject in a previous scene is shown again in close up
> Cut away- when an object is previously visible and shown in the next scene

Eyeline match-
When the character looks off screen the next shows us what he is looking at.

Match on action-
When a character begins to do some thing in one scene and carries it on through the change of scene.

Temporal elliptical editing-
Missing out events to compress time.

Fade out*-
When the scene changes from the shot to a colour (usually black).

Fade in*-
The new shot gradually lightens in.

Wipe*-
A line goes across the screen replacing it with the new shot.

Continuity editing-
Involves a story which is cut together in the smoothest simplest and least challenging way, so they match shot-to-shot, the lighting stays constant and the action stays central to the frame.

we will try to use all these editing techniques in the main task, we will definitely use an eyeline match, and cuts.

*= ways of joining and editing shots together.

Analysis of editing in Casino Royale
The scene opens with a man walking into an elevator, the use of an eyeline match shows the audience that he is nervous as he seems to be in a rush, and wants the elevator to hurry up, this is emphasised as when it shows the numbers counting down it shows an extreme closeup connoting the elevator moving is the only thing he is thinking about.

There is then temporal elliptical editing showing the audience that time is moving on and it could also be a metaphor for the characters thoughts as he is moving fast and looks quite nervous. The fact that the scene is also in black and white symbolises danger. As it is Daniel Craigs first bond movie the fact that it is in black and white links to the franchise as most prior Bond films have been in black and white which tells the audience that Bond will be shown in the next few minutes.
The temporal elliptical editing is then repeated to carry on the same audience reaction as before but it uses a match on action to show that it is smooth and fluent ans the character walks through the hall. It then cuts to the other side of a door, as the audience waits in anticipation, they know there will be some sort of confrontation as the opening of the door, symbolises the end of the line, no where to run.
When the character begins to walk through the room the camera pans whilst tracking opposite to where the character is walking showing there is a more dominant force on the other side of the room, the audience begins to see the silhouette of a character sitting on a chair watching the character walk through the room, this shows whoever this is he is a highly skilled professional as he hasn't been caught, much like the franchise star James Bond.
The scene progresses and we see the character look at his safe, he realises it been opened and he isn't alone when he turns around he is caught in a high angled, wide framed shot, which juxtapose poses the superiority of the two characters, by know the whole of the audience realises it is James bond and he is shown to be lower and smaller than the other character, but we know he is the most superior in the whole franchise.
The scene progresses and after a few moments of dialogue the character realises he is not the most superior and he sits down to show the audience this. That is followed up by the same character opening a drawer and revealing a gun through a close up of the drawer, which is the first hint towards a conflict in the movie.
The character pulls out the gun previously shown and begins to smile as he threatens Bond the shot changes to a mid shot of defenceless bond who also has a smirk on his face as he pulls out the Ammo form the gun the audience knows he wouldn't leave anything that would assist the enemy.
This is a flash back we know this due to the use of colour which hasn't been used before, in the flash back Bond is in a fight with someone, which results in a close up of Bond as he drowns the other character.
The opening sequence ends with this long shot of bond aiming the gun at the person who he thought was dead, this is after he did the exact same thing to the character in the room, the fact that it shows Bond kill two people within 10 seconds shows us that he is an expert at what he does but also its a boring and repetitive life.

Target Audience

Our demographic is from the age of 12-30 because we are making an action/spy, this means they will have to watch violence, but not enough to make it an 18 age limit, they will also want to see the action and get that sense of adrenaline.

Psychographic, when watching our movie as most action movie watchers are people who have previously watched an action movie and seek that adrenaline boost, it involves them in the movie.

We are going to apply this research by trying to add more action and involving scenes into the movie and opening sequence.

Codes and Conventions Further Reserach

The codes and Conventions of action genre:
>Loads of predictability, there is always a predictable plot.
>Single stranded, linear, closed narrative
>Exotic locations where the characters have to contend with extremes of climate, as well as evil forces
>Dominant representation of gender: male/female action hero. Mulvey’s male gaze and contemporary female gaze can apply.
>More narrative action codes than enigma codes.
>Star Marketing: Audience identification/expectations

The Codes And Conventions Analysis.

This picture is a good example of the codes and conventions used in the action/spy sub-genre.

This clearly shows us the use of star marketing, the long term action and spy genre fans are familiar with Daniel Craig as a leading actor and one of the best in the business.

The costumes wore in this poster are the common 'Bond' costumes being smart attire whilst still being involved in the action which is shown as bond is holding a gun which links into the fans who are commonly returning to see new editions of the well known franchise,

It also uses Mulvey's male and female gaze theory as in the background there is a woman who looks to be being left by Bond, which links to the representations of women in action and spy genre movies, this being that women are objects for men to admire and they are always being sexualised throughout the genres movies.

In the Bond movies traditionally there is a woman which means it becomes appealing to long term fans which are within the films demographic of male 15-28.

The editing is also used to keep Bond in the main focus of the frame which is another show of the representations of women in the action genre as the women are made to seem inferior to the men.

How this will help!!!

We will attempt to use as many of these codes and conventions in our main task, for example we are going to have the main character have a gun which will convey action, We will also try to add the protagonist as a male to follow the male representations in the action/spy genre.

Shot type research (working on the pictures)

In all films and movies there are a variety of shot types used.

Close up-
This shot is were the character takes up the whole frame usually to show superiority.

Point of view-
Shows the characters perspective to engage the audience.

Over the shoulder shot-
Looking from behind a character to create mystery the aspect of being stalked.

Long Shot-
This shot is from further away then a close up but still keeps the character in the frame.

Mid shot-
This shot type shows part of the character without losing the impression of the whole character.

Two Shot-
Having two characters in the frame at once usually used in dialogue.

We are going to try and use all of these shot types in are preliminary task and main task and if we come to any dead ends i will write about it after filming.

Analysis

The scene opens with an establishing shot of a storm on an ocean, this is a pathetic fallacy as the storm flashes which is telling the audience something dramatic is going on. The scene doesn't fade in showing that it isn't calm and smooth.
With another rough transition the scene cuts to a room full of men who are smoking and gambling the, camera is shaking around which tells us the scene isn't running smoothly, the close shot keeps all of the cigarettes and cards in focus but not the characters telling us they are irrelevant to the audience.
There is another rough cut to the ocean where we see a body in the water which leaves the audience, questioning who he is, why he is there and what will happen next, This mid shot juxtaposes the previous shot as it goes from friends gambling to a mysterious figure in the water.
This long shot shows the silhouette of a sailor the use of little natural lighting tells us it is hard to see anything especially the man in the water the audience waits in anticipation for the boat and the man to meet.
The use of an eye line match signifies the sailor noticing the man in water through the point of view, but the repeated eye line match tells the audience he second guessing and he thinks its nothing, the long shot of the body shows us that it is nearly impossible to see the body which leaves the audience curious on whether he will notice.
The scene ends with a close up of the body and a strike of lighting, which connotes two major things, he is an important character throughout the movie or he is dangerous and the source of danger in the movie. The scene ends with a title sequence which is already leaving the audience anticipating what will happen next.

Genre Research II

This was the optional task for the first term in the media course, in this slide show i have added brief summaries on each of the subjects as asked for. Each of the slides will have a separate post dedicated to the full research of the subject.

Genre Research I

For my genre research I watched the opening sequence from the movie, Olympus Has Fallen from my genre research I know that Action spy movies use editing music and shot type variations to manipulate the audience into getting a surge of Adrenaline.

This means we will also try to add the pleonastic sounds, the ranging shot types to improve the audiences experience.

I also now know the basic conventions used in the genre for example in an action movie there is usually a hero and a villain in a spy movie the hero is usually extremely talented in combat like wise the villain which will make for a good end fight scene to save the day.

If there is a victim or a kidnapped character it usually is a woman as the connotations of women in the genre are innocent, vulnerable and weak which makes the audience root for the good guy as they are saving the woman.

Our victim in the film is a male because it goes against the conventions which will make it more engaging and entertaining for the audience.

The Pitch (summary)

The brief that we were given was one preliminary task, to produce a short sequence of shots were a character is walking down a corridor opens a door and then sits down and has a conversation, we need to include 180 degree rule the reverse shot and a range of angles.
We also need to do the main task, which is to create a 2 minute opening sequence on the genre of our choice.

This is the pitch for our main task.

We have done some research on the genre of spy/ action and i decided to watch and analyse the opening scene from the movie Olympus Has Fallen from the opening scene i have gained a wider view and knowledge of how the different shot types, costumes, lighting and all the different signs can create a totally different opening scene.

The title that we all agreed on was The Hunt.

The target audience is going to be 16-30 years old as it action based and contains violence.

From my research, we have decided to go with the spy-action genre. The opening scene will start with a man(the protagonist) sitting on his couch watching the news when a breaking news story comes on, the prime ministers son has been kidnapped, the protagonist gets a call from the head of MI5 and the caller says "its time to come out of retirement", The scene will be mostly close ups and extreme close ups to create a mysterious affect, for the audience. The title scene then plays and we are going for a James Bond styled title sequence. The final part will be the first time we seE the whole of the protagonists face as he loads a gun and exits the house.
